I found a blog called Adventures of a Once Homeless Girl. Sadly, by the time I found it she had already decided to discontinue telling her story online. The reason she gives is complicated but the paragraph she wrote below makes a good summary.
The most shameful and traumatic experience of my life is all people know me for, and has given me the ability to discuss the things that matter to me. And sadly it makes me uncomfortable I don’t just want to be known for the crap I went through but for the person I am now. I want to be Nadia and not “homeless girl”.
All any street person wants is to be treated like a human being, an individual. That guy I see at the bus stop sometimes is Jeffrey, not the homeless guy at the bus stop.
If you are afraid to speak to homeless people on the streets, at least look for and listen to their stories in the news and on the internet. Read Nadia’s site to learn her story. There are many sites like hers that give you the opportunity to get to know the people on the streets, not as homeless men and women, but like someone not that different from you and me.
